The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) conducted a graduation ceremony in Mumbai for its most recent jewellery design students on April 19.

This event marked the successful completion of the GIA Jewelelry Design programme and provided a platform for industry insights.

“The gem and jewellery industry has many verticals,” stated B N Jewellers India Private Limited’s head of new product development Devinder Layal at the event, the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council reported on its website. “Obtaining a quality education from a reputable institute such as GIA can strengthen the industry by ensuring that more qualified professionals meet international standards.”

    Industry Insights and Engagement

The ceremony was attended by prominent figures including Layal, who delivered the keynote address on “Product and Product Development”. In his speech, Layal emphasized the critical role of product development in maintaining competitiveness within the Indian jewellery industry.

Vijay Golecha shared some personal life lessons and valuable insights into the gem and jewellery industry. He stated, “The best thing that has happened to you is that all of you have earned your credential from GIA. All you now need to do is follow your dreams. Equipped with the knowledge gained from GIA, go ahead and pursue them.”

He further added, “There are many designers in the industry with far better resources than you, which will give them easy access to precious gemstones and materials. At the end of the day, it is your knowledge and the finesse of your jewellery design that will set you apart.” He encouraged students to “compete with yourself”.

Addressing the event, Sriram Natarajan adds, “GIA education prepares students for their journey in the gem and jewellery industry. I am glad to see these students embark on a career in jewellery design. I wish them the best of luck.”

Apoorva Deshingkar expressed, “All GIA students go through intensive training in jewellery designing. Empowered with the GIA credentials and now with Vijay Golecha ji’s words of encouragement, I am confident our students are ready to create their mark in the gem and jewellery industry.”

GIA India also held a graduation ceremony for its diamond students last week. “Congratulations to all the brilliant minds for successfully graduating from GIA’s Diamond Program,” said GIA India on Facebook. “Wishing you all the best as you embark on your journey in the gem and jewellery industry! Thanking our esteemed guest speaker, Salim Daginawala, director [of] J.S. Daginawala and president, Surat Jewellers Association for imparting valuable insights and knowledge to our students and for answering all their questions.”

    Educational Excellence and Career Preparation

The GIA Jewelry Design programme, which is a nine-week course at GIA’s Mumbai campus, provides students with detailed knowledge of jewellery design theory and practical skills. This curriculum prepares students well for professional challenges they might face in the jewellery design industry.

    Industry Implications

For jewellers, the entry of newly trained designers from institutions like GIA India introduces new ideas and designs into the market. Such graduation events are significant as they encourage ongoing learning and idea sharing, crucial for sustained industry growth.

The focus on product development during the event is a key takeaway for jewellers, pointing towards a trend of more consumer-focused and differentiated product offerings, which could enhance customer engagement and market presence.
