A fire at R V Ornaments, a diamond jewellery factory in Katargam, Surat, has left 14 artisans injured, with four in critical condition. The incident occurred following an explosion in a gas burner, according to local fire officials. Those injured are receiving medical treatment at a private hospital.

    Incident Overview

The fire broke out on the third floor of the factory, where the workers were engaged in cleaning diamond-studded gold ornaments. Gas for the operation was being supplied from LPG cylinders on the ground floor through a pipeline network, which is suspected to have developed a leak. Upon arrival, fire officials found the room filled with smoke, with flames still active in certain areas. Three fire personnel, equipped with masks, entered the premises to extinguish the fire and ventilate the space.

    Emergency Response and Investigation

Surat Mayor Daxesh Mavani visited the site and spoke with factory employees to assess the situation. Chief Fire Officer Basant Pareek mentioned that while the exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, early findings suggest a gas leak in the supply line. Investigations are ongoing to identify the cause and prevent similar incidents.

    Industry Safety Considerations

The incident raises important safety concerns for the jewellery manufacturing sector, especially in facilities where hazardous materials and intricate processes are involved. Jewellers may need to review safety measures related to gas supply systems and emergency responses. Following established safety protocols is essential for protecting workers and ensuring smooth operations.

    Worker Safety and Compliance

This incident highlights the risks associated with jewellery production, emphasising the need for regular safety checks, training, and maintenance. It is crucial for jewellers and factory owners to prioritise worker safety and comply with regulations to maintain a safe working environment and uphold industry standards.

    Statements from Officials

Katargam Fire Officer Ramesh Sailor described the scene: “When we reached the spot, we found two ambulances carrying injured persons exiting the factory premises. We found flames burning at some places inside the room where the accident took place. The entire room was filled with smoke. Wearing masks, three of our men entered the room, controlled the fire, and opened all the windows and doors to let the smoke out.”

Chief Fire Officer Basant Pareek added, “The cause of the fire is not known yet but there was a leakage in the gas supply line. Our teams are probing into the incident.”

    Looking Forward

The jewellery industry must remain vigilant in maintaining safety standards, especially as operations expand. This incident serves as a reminder for jewellers to regularly review and improve safety protocols, ensuring the safety of their workers and the stability of their business operations.
