Gemological Science International (GSI) has opened a new gemmological laboratory in Kolkata, expanding its operations in one of India’s jewellery manufacturing regions.
Located near the jewellery hub of Camac Street, the facility aims to serve manufacturers, traders and retailers in Eastern India by offering GSI’s grading and certification services.
Service Expansion in Eastern India
The Kolkata facility is part of GSI’s ongoing expansion within India. The city is a major centre for jewellery production and trade, particularly in gold and diamond-set jewellery. The local laboratory is intended to reduce turnaround times and improve service access for clients in the region.
Speaking at the opening, Ramit Kapur, Managing Director of GSI, said:
“At GSI, we are much more than just a gemological laboratory; we are a full-scale solutions provider. In every step of the way, we are focused on bridging gaps in the jewellery industry, whether it’s ensuring standardised grading, offering comprehensive reports, or finding innovative digital ways to empower retailers.”
Technology and Certification Services
The new laboratory will offer GSI’s full range of gemstone and diamond grading, testing and certification services. Attendees at the launch were shown recent developments in diamond screening equipment and digital reporting tools intended for use by retailers.
“Kolkata’s market is uniquely dynamic, and we are here to make sure that everyone, from manufacturers to retailers, can rely on GSI for the highest standards of gemstone and diamond jewellery certification for their purchases and sales,” added Kapur.
Industry Participation
The opening event was attended by figures from across the jewellery sector, including Pankaj Parekh (Regional Chairman East, GJEPC), Suvro Chandra (Joint Managing Director, P.C. Chandra Jewellers), Ashok Bengani (President, Calcutta Jewellers Welfare and Ankurhati Associations), and Amit Soni (COA Member, GJC).
The new lab is expected to provide easier access to third-party certification for jewellers in the region. Proximity to gemmological services may support businesses in meeting certification and documentation requirements.
