The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) marked World Environment Day by outlining a series of sustainability initiatives implemented across its India International Jewellery Show (IIJS) exhibitions. In line with the 2024 theme of “Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience,” the Council described measures aimed at reducing environmental impact at its events.
GJEPC, the government-backed body for India’s gem and jewellery export sector, organises the India International Jewellery Show (IIJS), one of the key trade exhibitions in the industry. With greater scrutiny on the environmental impact of trade events, GJEPC has introduced a range of sustainability-focused practices at IIJS.
Implementation of Green Practices
GJEPC has implemented a number of measures intended to reduce waste and carbon emissions at IIJS, including:
- Modular and Reusable Exhibition Stalls: Constructed using eco-friendly materials, designed to minimise construction waste.
- 100% Renewable Energy: All IIJS events are powered entirely by renewable energy sources.
- Tree Planting Campaign: Under the ‘One Earth, An IIJS Initiative’ programme, over 100,000 trees have been planted, with one tree planted for every registered visitor.
- Eco-Friendly Branding: The use of fabric banners and non-toxic inks replaces PVC flexes.
- Digital Entry Badges: Electronic badges and facial recognition systems have replaced plastic alternatives.
- Reusable Materials: Reusable show bags and cafeteria cutlery have been introduced to reduce single-use items.
- Biodegradable Water Bottles: Single-use plastics are being phased out in favour of biodegradable alternatives.
- Sustainable Transport Options: Electric buses and public transport are promoted to reduce emissions from attendee travel.
- Environmentally Friendly Infrastructure: Special structures are constructed from reusable materials.
- Stakeholder Education: On-site awareness efforts form a part of GJEPC’s sustainability messaging.
